Happy Memorial Day!

Memorial Day traditionally marks the beginning of summer, a day off from work, and a moment to enjoy quality time with friends and family.

But we should not lose sight of what this day commemorates. Memorial Day is a time to celebrate and honor those who have fallen while defending our country. Even under difficult circumstances, the courage and commitment of our military men and women has never wavered. We thank them for all that they do.

My Memorial Day weekend kicked off with the annual Ride of the Patriots to Rolling Thunder. 400,000 bikers from all over the country rode to the Pentagon to honor our soldiers who have fallen in battle. I had the privilege of taking part once again in this unique tradition at the send-off ceremony at the Harley Davidson in Fairfax City.

Yesterday, I went to the VFW Posts in Fairfax City and Vienna where we read the names of those who died serving our country. They were somber, touching events.

From there I went to the Viva! Vienna! Festival. I had a great time meeting constituents and hearing their concerns, and taking in all of the crafts, food, music and rides this annual community celebration has to offer. I was deeply touched to be able to speak at the Memorial Day tribute and remember those who gave the last full measure of devotion so that our country could remain free.

From my family to yours, I hope you had a safe and happy Memorial Day.
